This lovely little woodland fairy is called “Keeping the Balance” She not only balances on her little tiptoes on the stepping stones across the babbling brook, but she also balances between childhood Keeping her Balance by Terrie K.and womanhood. I had a wonderful time sculpting this piece and would like to share some of the process with you.
People who have never tried it, may find the idea of sculpting a face a little overwhelming, but with a little knowledge and some practice anyone can create lovely little heads for their polymer clay dolls.
First, start with the essentials. Good clay and tools are a must. I use a mixture of Prosculpt, Cernit, and Super Sculpey on a 1:1 mixture. I find this to make a very strong finished doll and a very workable mixture that can be smoothed and sculpted very nicely.. For my normal fairy sculpture, I use an ball of clay a little smaller that a golf ball. My tools consist of a wooden skewer like those used for making shih-ka-bobs, a plastic sculpting tool with balls on the ends, a wooden sculpting tool,, several different sizes of stylus, a tiny clayshaper rubber tipped taper pointed tool, a xacto knife, wire for making your armature and a soft small paint brush for smoothing.
